Mechanical if u like science and math. This course is like going to science stream in jc haha. Also this course more general, can change course in uni, such as business if you dont like engineering.(flexible).

Lol usually if u go poly with very good o level scores(l1r5 <12 raw), u will be placed at the best class in the course. Usually these classes got 80-90% eligible for university. (local etc NUS, NTU)

Hi, my L1R5 is 6, after deduction 4. I want to go to NYJC but the only problem is my Chinese was only a C6. Will that be a problem or is Nanyang JC actually not as China as it seems? Thanks!

Can someone explain how the " take chinese for 1 year in JC can already" system works ? Does it mean that we only have to take mother tongue for J1 and if we pass it , we no longer have to study or touch it anymore? During that 1 year , is the exam the actual A Level or just an internal exam?

I am a poly lecturer (who has gone through the JC path).

This topic of JC versus Poly often creates a false impression of both routes as pathways to University. Politically, it is incorrect. JC is a pathway to Uni, Poly is not. A Diploma is an "End Certificate", where you can take it to apply for a full time job as it is recognized by the industry. An A-level certificate is not an "End Certificate". The stuffs taught in JC are not complete without a university degree.

This mindset has to be established first before any meaningful comparison of the two, as they are supposed to be different. Having said that, there are lots of students (mine included) who went on from Poly, or even ITE, to University, but in percentage terms is lesser as compared to the JC. This is architected by the system.

So when you make you choices, be aware that, if you choose the Poly, that diploma could be you last certificate before you go to work. If you have aspirations for higher qualification, then you must work harder in Poly. According to Government statistics, about 20% of Poly graduates make it to local Universities - NUS, NTU, SMU (now perhaps include SUTD. Not sure why SIM is not counted).

hi ppl!! my Son had scored a raw score of 14 ,after bonus points of 2 he has 12. He plans to aim for a Jc but do ur have any recommendation as to where he shd consider ? He is fairly int in srjc but he miss the cutoff point by one mark. is it still adviceable then to put srjc as first choice ? He is currently also looking at some poly courses with cop ard 8/9 and his R4 after minusing is 9. does this mean the chances of him going to those courses are harder cuz he is like on the dot . pls anyone help!!!! it will be greatly appreciated

Hi, there are actually two questions in your post. Will try my best to answer both to my knowledge:

For JC

Miss cutoff by one mark, probably can't get in. Best is to also go to the school to appeal as well, especially if your son's CCA can help contribute well to the JC too. SRJC put as first choice will be good as there is still a minor chance of being posted there without appeal, but the probability is low.

If really want to go JC, then second choice probably good to put a jc that the L1R5 can qualify.

For Poly

I gather from your post that your son has decided to put JC as the initial choice and poly as a fall-back.

Based on this, the poly choices will not be on the first choice, and your son probably may not stand a good chance vs candidates with exact scores (there are definitely many) and applying for the same courses as the first choice.

hey thanks for replying !! but if that's the case , what do u suggest my Son do ? as in with his current situation , is it wiser to still put srjc as first choice ? or mayb consider the poly courses as first? cuz by his pref , he wld like srjc, poly courses that int him , then other jcs. so the dilemma that he is facing is whether to put srjc as first choice then another Jc which he might get in then poly OR srjc, poly then other jc

If u put another JC that he can qualify, chances are high that he will enter it.

So I think the first decision to make is which one does he really want (JC or poly), and not rely on what-ifs. Then it will be easier.

Anw I want to go to Uni in the end to get a degree, and I was all out at first to go to poly but however I realised only 20% of students who get admitted to Uni are poly students, and you have to do exceptionally well. So I wanted to go for the science stream in JC. My Cop is 12 points, minus bonus 2 points from cca, 10. However the problem I have is that I did not take A Maths and this is really affecting my decision making as most JC require you to take H2 Maths if you want to go to the science stream. I really want to go thru the science stream but I am really confused as of now. Thanks for reading my post and do try to help me

On the choices, please know that, irregardless of the position you put down for 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. the person with the lower score will ALWAYS get the choice(s). For example, based on last years Last Aggregate Score (new name for cut-off point), xx JC is 11 (net) and you missed by 1 point (12). This year, it depends of the applicants to that xx JC. If you put it at 1st choice, and another applicant with 11 pts puts it at 12th choice, he or she will still get it before you. This is what is meant by merit. So use last year's LAS as a guide only. No guarantee it will be the same this year.

Thank you Athulican, most JCs requires me to take H2 Maths to proceed on to the science stream which I can't as I did not take A Maths. I only know that JJC, YJC and SRJC offer science stream classes which does not require you to take H2 Maths... But I'm really very confused to as of whether I should go to YJC (I'm afraid of the environment and my parents want me to choose the JC that is nearest to my score 12 (10 aft cca bonus pts). So is there any way to getting around this? Thank you

Hello. Firstly, congratulations on your O Levels.

Do you want to consider taking H2 Maths? Yes, without A Maths you have to work extra hard to close the gap, but it will greatly open up your choices when it comes to university.

Take a look at this. It is the Minimum Subject Requirements the courses in Nanyang Technological Univeristy. H2 Maths is required in most Engineering courses and some Science courses.

You don't need even need H2 Maths to become a doctor!

I believe YJC allows you to take H2 Maths without A Maths. Had a student from there once who took H2 Maths with no A Maths background.

But you will need to work doubly hard to catch up with the rest of the students whom took A Maths. The student I mentioned score A in H2 Maths eventually with his tremendous hard work.

You could check out the other JCs and ask the teachers in charge.
