5cm^3 of 0.10monl/dm^3 of potassium manganate (VII) reacts with
12.0cm^3 of nitrogen monoxide at rtp. A colourless solution
containing a brown precipitate of manganese (IV) oxide, MnO2 was
produced. Determine the final oxidation number of nitrogen in the
compound and hence suggest a possible formula of the
nitrogen-containing product of the reaction.
Tips :
1. Work out the moles of electrons transferred, based on the
moles of oxidizing agent used.
2. Work out the moles of electrons transferred per mole of
NO.
3. Based on initial OS of N in NO, and the moles of electrons
transferred per mol of NO, work out the final OS of N in the
product.
4. Based on the final OS of N, list out all possible N
containing species with this OS.
