Hi ,found this IGCSE question from an international student of
mine,seriously need some help to solve for him
Assume the gasoline contain of the hydrocarbon heptane C7H16
The mass of 1 dm3 of heptane is 684g.
Balanced equation of the complete combustion of heptane is
C7H16 + 11O2 --> 7CO2 + 8H2O
Calculate the number of moles of heptane in 1 Dm3
show your workings
A car on average uses 1 Dm3 of gasoline to travel a distance of
20Km
Find the theoretical mass of carbon dioxide which the car will
produce in travelling 20Km
Show your workings
No. of moles of heptane = sample mass / molar mass.
Use stoichiometry to find the no. of moles of CO2 generated
(based on the moles of heptane available).
Sample mass of CO2 generated = no. of moles x molar mass.
