Considering that this is PSLE and during that time, I recall not
understanding algebra, you can implement the graph to demonstrate
the difference between the 2 cars:

In which you will realise through the power of fraction, that
1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6, whereby 1/6 = 40KM. By understanding this
fundamental, simply 6*40KM to obtain 240KM as the total distance
between SG and Malacca.
Do note that it's 40km/h x 1h = 40km. If the question was:
"After 2
hours, Alan completed 1/2 of the journey, while Bernard completed
1/3 of the journey."
instead, it would be 1/6 journey -> 40km/h x 2h = 80km, and
the answer would be 480km.
