May I know if I was asked to write the equation for 1st IE of
Hydrogen
do i write it this way
H(g) -> H+ (g) + e ?
2. How do I describe and explain the difference in 2nd I.E
between Al+ (+1820 kJ/mol) and Si+ (+1580 kJ/mol)? Similarly, the
difference in 1st IE for Ge (+762 kJ/mol) and As (+944 kJ/mol).
It will be fine if both questions are based on the same concept.
In that case, you guys can just help me solve one so I can see how
I am supposed to present the workings. Thank you
Yes, your equation is fine (though you should write e- for an
electron, not just e).
Al+ is isoelectronic with Mg, and Si+ is isoelectronic with Al.
Why is the 1st I.E. of Al lower than that for Mg? The reason is the
same for the 2nd I.E. of Al+ and Si+.
The increasing 1st I.E. for Ge and As isn't anomalous (ie. it's
generally expected), so you shouldn't have a problem with it.
