Integration (some clarifications needed)

Hi , I am not sure hwo to integrate this equation, y = xe^x

Do you do this x (e^x)? There isn't much to integrate, it seems.

I just realised that if you have the Panpac textbook, you may refer to page 438, question 10.

It's not possible at O levels to integrate this without the other parts of the question to show. It's possible at A levels though.

You were asked to show that d/dx[(x-1)e^x] = xe^x.

Therefore if you integrate xe^x... you should get (x-1)e^x.

Hi,

To integrate xe^x directly, we need to use an advanced technique called integration by parts, which is not covered in the O-level mathematics syllabus.

A typical exam question will require the student to carry out differentiation of an expression first, say d/dx [(x-1)e^x] = xe^x. Then another part will ask the student to reverse the process.
