Hi all, I am a right handed hook bowler. I have been bowling for a few years now but i am still not able to stay consistent in my delivery. I am looking for a coach now. Any recommendations guys? Smile

Hi bowlingisfun,

My $0.02 suggestion to you is that you should call up some of the bowling centres convenient to you and ask if they have coaches conducting lessons there, go observes as many as you could and see who you like to learn from than decide.

For ppl to make recommendation here could be subjective, what if the coaches here does not suits your favour?

Actually I had several coaches in the past and when they saw me bowl, they would always ask me to change my style of bowling. Not to correct my mistake, but to totally change my style, which i feel that it shouldnt be the way.

I am a cranker and I cant help but feel that just because they do not know how to coach a cranker, they asked me to change to a style which they are comfortable in coaching; a stroker. The reason why i concluded this is because they would say things like that "your timing is late", "try not to bend your elbow" "you should not have an open shoulder"and blar blar blar ... Isnt those the trademarks of a cranker?

Just would like to have someone, who knows how to coach cranker, coach me. Sad

Hi bowlingisfun,

At the current moment I don't think there's one specific "Cranking Coach" available in SG now, most know how to crank are mainly bolwers, not ready for official coach, perhaps a few years time maybe.

So how? learn the hard way by trial and error...... I Did.....and I've Done it !
was a Spinner though......... Hehehehe.

P.S.
Personally, I felt Crankers got to be prepared Very High/Low games, as lane conditions and ball selection play a vital part on the games.

You may want to consider enrolling the below course, perhaps you will learn something....Posting for a pal Aloysius, he's helpful guy and a cranker too.

I got same problem with you liao,don't worry..u not alone.
To tell you the truth,I've heard it all,''wahliao,stand 2nd dot aim 2nd arrow la,why u stand so far?why you must throw like that'', ''wah piang,ur line so jialat!u must slide liao,dont be stubborn!score so lousy,you can play in children league la''...Actually i almost give up bowling due to some negative comments.But I appreciate the advice of those sincere wanna help me la.

In my opinion,changing your natural way(crank) to something else is very very difficult and I think we shld just keep improving our natural style of bowling.I've been learning by trial and error for abt 8 months,just like someone here mention and I'm still not even 70% there.LOL.It sure cost a bomb but if you're serious,I believe its worth it.

I normally start at 5 boards left of middle dot and aim in between 3rd & 4th arrow and my problem is getting my balance(fast feet,slow feet?I dont know..hehe) and therefore my line is always out.And also its very hard to repeat the same shot. Whats yours?

Yes, on the technical & fundamentals part of bowling.

No, on the style of bowling, a coach can only provide some informations and useful knowlegde on the lanes and balls.

The rest...... I'll guess its up to his own hard work thru trial & errors.

I'm right hand 4 step approch hook bowler,
just my 2cent comment, actually cranker style is nt very suitable for Asian ( unless u r bigger in size, longer with powerful finger & oso with good arm strenght like those angmo ) if nt u will realise u always having problems wif ur approch & release timing, causes very in consistent in your bowl line.
mainly is becos u r unable to control or maintain ur arm swinging power due to u nd to crank before ur release.....

Thanks for the comment babyhunter. In my opinion, being a cranker is not about size, rather its all about technique. I have seen alot of small to medium built crankers in Singapore. The reason why crankers plant their last step way before their swings come down (late timing) is to allow them to position their fingers below the ball so as to generate the high revs. In my humble opinion, the main reason why this technique of bowling is not encouraged here is because of the lack of coaches who really know how to coach a cranker. Crying or Very sad

If I'm not wrong......ppl only start practising cranking style in sg about...15 yrs bk. cos lt look really stylero when c those angmo play.
but the prob is cranker mainly making use of the arm & finger strenght to push & lift the ball ( to increase the revolution & the speed of the ball) not by the arms swinging & the momentums of approch like those triditional hook bowler. that oso why u nd to plant ur last step way b4 the swings come down, & normally u will nt lock ur ellbow. ( again, purely by arms & fingers strenght to control the ball).
so...if u dun hv good arms & fingers strenght, once u get tired, u realise ur bowl line start to out & become very very inconsistant....
in my 15yrs of bowling exp...i hardly c any good cranker in sg wif very consistant score....
jus to share my view nia.... Wink

I share similar view with babyhunter on the consistency part, so if someone is really really serious about adopting cranking as preferred style, he muz be wiling to work hard not only on the lanes, but oso his physical training.

But who will be that serious other than the Nat'l Bowlers? and have the time.

But if doing it for chllenging self abilities for being to able to bowl like a good cranker, be prepared to face with inconsistecy problems, many many High/Low games.

Whether you bowl in league or tournament, if too many H/L games, the entire game is already over before you find your line.

But I do not rule out the entertainment value of some good hellof cranking shots.

Last but not least, do take care of your body, excessive use of force on a regular basis may leads to long term injury on certain areas.
