a draw will put man utd thru. this match is not as important as the chelsea match away. I hope fergie put on reserves like foster, brown, fabio, rafael, nani, scholes, owen and rest the regulars like rooney, berbatov, rio, vidic, VDS etc.

The birth is nine days overdue and Rooney's absence has heightened belief that the England striker is shortly to become a father for the first time.

If this is the case, Rooney will almost certainly be excused from duty against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on Tuesday, given United require just one more win to qualify for the knockout phase.

Central defensive duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were also absent with ankle problems. Vidic is understood to have an outside chance of facing the Russians. But Ferdinand, 31 this Saturday, has been ruled out by Sir Alex Ferguson, who admits the England man must now focus on getting fit for Sunday's trip to Chelsea.

Jonny Evans and Wes Brown combined against Blackburn to help United keep their first clean sheet in the league since the 2-0 win at Stoke in September. And although the pair remain understudies to Ferdinand and Vidic, Ferguson insists there are very few partnerships as good as United's back-up centre-halves.

He said: "A lot has been made about Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic being out, but when you have the back-up of Jonny Evans and Wes Brown it can't be bad. "There aren't many partnerships in the Premier League better than Brown and Evans. "We sent Vidic to a specialist and, hopefully, he's going to be all right on Tuesday.

"Rio is having treatment and Ryan Giggs, too, so neither will make Tuesday and we have a fight on our hands to have them ready for Chelsea on Sunday."

Dimitar Berbatov was also missing from training, but there was some good news as Park Ji-sung was able to return after a recent absence with fluid on his knee.

Owen start with Berba then.

A draw is enough for man u to qualify. fergie should play his reserves as sunday is the top of the table clash against chelsea, that is more important than this match. hope he rests his main players for this match.

iceFatboy SG

I just hope MU won't underestimate, and backfires, and put further pressure for them in the league and in this group.

i think it will be a draw, a goalless one. lol

Slutski - can't wait for Old Trafford showdown.

New CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutski cannot wait to get his claws into Manchester United. Slutski joined the Russian side on a three-year contract last week after former Tottenham boss Juande Ramos was sacked.

Slutski arrives with a growing reputation, having built on his work at FC Moscow by guiding FC Krylya to sixth spot and a European spot for the first time in their history last season.

Now he has an even bigger challenge, although not as big as the one he faced as a 19-year-old when his playing days were ended in bizarre circumstances.

"It is true," he shrugged. "I got the injury at 19 when I was climbing a tree looking for a neighbour's cat. "I ended up as a hero in my village because I saved the cat. Unfortunately, I also fell out of the tree and injured my knee. It was awful because I had hardly started my career."

Slutski can smile about the incident now but out of such a harrowing turn of events, the 38-year-old has risen to his present position as the next manager to lock horns with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Beaten at the Luzhniki Stadium a fortnight ago, CSKA are unlikely to prevent United sealing their place in the knock-out phase with two matches to spare.

However, Igor Anikfeev has plenty of reasons to impress having been linked with a move to United during the January transfer window.

"I have heard the speculation but it is just talk, nothing else," he said.

"I cannot look at this match from a personal perspective. The career of every footballer grows from such games.

"We are playing a legendary team in a legendary stadium. It will be an inspirational game, the most important in our careers."

I think he play to get match fitness, but dun expect him to play the full 90 mins though. he may be involved on sunday match, preferably partnering anderson instead of carrick or scholes, as these 2 are totally off form.
