SAM ALLARDYCE is facing a battle with Alex Ferguson to land Mark Viduka. Middlesbroughs Aussie ace becomes a free agent next month and is still refusing to commit his long-term future to the Riverside despite a new two-year, £40,000-a- week offer on the table. Manchester United chief Fergie, who believe the 31-year-old is the best free transfer on offer this summer. United can guarantee the European football that Viduka craves.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate hoped the signing of Jonathan Woodgate would convince Viduka to stay on Teesside. And chairman Steve Gibson was so desperate for the 19-goal hitman not to leave that he made a last-ditch effort to persuade him to stay before jetting off on holiday Down Under.

As we may know, youth rebounds the fastest, while older team needs more time to recuperate. So we are at an disadvantage..

Actually i think he is quite a good finisher tho... Better than A smith. His age may be a disadvantage but teams need experience as well as youth... And with Solskjaer into his last year, and also there is no telling if he can continue at the top level next season when he will be 35 yr old... So if Viduka does come, he can be a super sub kind of player... Mr. Green

I dun think viduka would come though, given United policy, any player above 30 will only be given a one year extension per contract, however viduka would be seeking a minimum 2 years at least probably..and viduka is not the kind of forward who love to track back to defend if necessary.. something our forwards are used to..but not him
