STEVE McCLAREN recently described Owen Hargreaves as
the glue which holds England together and likened him to Roy
Keane. With such high praise ringing in his ears, Hargreaves knows
now is not the time to come unstuck. England must win in Israel on
Saturday and the Keano approach is exactly what is
required.
Alex Ferguson clearly agrees with McClarens assessment of
Hargreaves. That is why Fergie is trying to take the Bayern Munich
star to Manchester United to fill the gap left by legendary
midfielder Keane, now Sunderland boss.
Hargreaves knows what he is doing. He won the Champions League as a
19-year-old and has done the double with Bayern in three of the
last four seasons. Big games and big challenges are right up his
street.
Hargreaves, 26, said: Keane was one of the most influential
players of the last 10 years and such a crucial player for
Manchester United. He was one of the reasons why they enjoyed so
much success and to be compared to someone of that stature is
fantastic.
Its important to win the ball in the middle of the park and try
and get it forward in any game you play. I think Ive shown I can
do that. But although I play the same position as Roy Keane did,
we are very different. He had his qualities and I have mine. When
you go on the pitch, the most important thing is the performance.
But some people are more vocal than others. At times, Im
relatively easy going and relaxed even though I get frustrated and
want to win as much as anyone.
