SCHOLES: MORE TWISTS IN TITLE RACE
Paul Scholes is refusing to get carried away by Manchester United's
stunning four-goal triumph at Tottenham on Sunday. The Premiership
leaders began what was supposed to be a far stiffer set of away
fixtures than major rivals Chelsea on the title run-in with the
biggest win at White Hart Lane in their illustrious history.
United's triumph maintained a six-point advantage over Jose
Mourinho's men at the top of the table and with
relegation-threatened Charlton due to visit Old Trafford this
weekend, there appears no immediate prospect of Chelsea closing the
gap.
However, like his manager Sir Alex Ferguson, Scholes prefers not to
look too far in the future. With a trip to Liverpool looming at the
beginning of next month and Portsmouth, Chelsea, Everton and
Manchester City also on the list of places still to visit, the Red
Devils' star feels there are a few unexpected developments still to
come.
"There will be a few twists and turns yet," he said. "Both teams
have got some difficult games left, especially when you look at our
away games. There is a long way to go." Although Scholes has been
widely touted as a potential player of the year, with Arsenal
skipper Thierry Henry among those who have voted for the former
England star, the player himself believes there is room for
improvement, particularly in the goalscoring stakes.
Scholes bundled home the third at Tottenham, but it was only his
sixth of the season, a tally the Salford-born star is not entirely
happy with. "I would like to have a few more goals," he said. "I
have six at the moment. Hopefully, there are more to come."
Ferguson is awaiting a full assessment on the broken nose Edwin van
der Sar suffered at the weekend. A precise timescale on the giant
Dutchman's likely absence had not been made public, although it
would be a major surprise if Tomasz Kuszczak was not called on for
the Charlton clash and the FA Cup tie against Reading the following
week, when Wayne Rooney will be suspended.
