Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits they were beaten to the punch by Everton when they first became aware of Wayne Rooney.
Ferguson will be hoping for a major contribution from Rooney today against Arsenal, having been starved of action this season but is no doubt relishing the prospect of facing the side he scored his first Premiership goal against as a raw 16-year-old back in 2002.

"I remember it well," said the United boss.

"But we knew all about Wayne long before then. We tried to get him when he was 14. He might have cost us 26 bob then. He ended up costing us ?26million."

you don't think it is sad ? u mean it is not a pity that they could't get rooney earlier ? o okay I was not being mean or watever but if man utd had did that 5 years ago they could have save the 26 million pounds and use it on other area

Its the same what... sometimes it all depends on luck also.

Chelsea could have got John Obi mikel for lesser than $2m when he was there for a try with the club but as they were slow, Man u sign him for $2m... Next thing chelsea had to pay $16m for him and Man u smile happily to the bank... What a difference a few days make, One week he was value at $2m the next $16m.

it was a Controversy as both clubs said that they had signed John Obi Mikel and I am glad that chelsea was ruled to be allowed to sign Obi Mikel Over Man Utd as Mikel State that he was force/pressurize to sign the man utd contract

It subsequently emerged that Mikel had travelled to London with his agent John Shittu to get away for a while from the situation in Norway. Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson considered travelling to Oslo to visit Mikel, but decided against this after Mikel was reported to have left the country.[5] Staying in a London hotel, Mikel stated on Sky Sports News that he had been pressurised into signing the contract with United.[6] He also claimed that he had asked the clubs for a week to think about it, but that this request was refused and the clubs pressured him into signing without his advisors being present. Mikel told the British media that Chelsea were the club he genuinely wanted to sign for. In response to these events, United made an official complaint to FIFA about the handling of the affair by Mikel's agents and Chelsea.[7] FIFA replied to this complaint in August 2005 stating there was no evidence to support a case against Chelsea FC. However, from this complaint FIFA did open an investigation against Manchester United and Lyn Oslo. Both these cases were settled when Chelsea FC intervened by volunteering to settle through arbitration with Lyn Oslo and Manchester United.[8]

and Man Utd was not smilling @ all they were upset that the player had such negative comment on the club and they were not able to sign this talented youngster
