Johnson has fought accusations of defensive concentration lapses
from the day he arrived at Liverpool three years ago.
Yet the England right-back has steadily defied his critics after
being switched to the left flank because of a lack of numbers and candidates.
Now Kop boss Rodgers has come out fighting on behalf of the Reds
star after his latest impressive display in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at
Chelsea.
Ironically Martin Skrtel’s illness meant Jose Enrique played
most of the game at left-back — although Johnson again stood out
when he was moved there late on.
And Rodgers insisted: “If there is a team of the season so far
in the Prem, then Glen would be in it. He’s one of the best
right-backs in the world playing on the left.”
Skrtel’s late withdrawal at the Bridge meant Daniel Agger had to
play with a groin strain, so he is struggling to face Wigan on
Saturday.
He said: “I had no choice. I hope I’ll be OK.”
