Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in Real
Madrid's 6-2 win at Sevilla last night to beat Leo Messi's record
of 42 league goals in a calendar year and send his team back to the
top of La Liga.
Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 10th minute and, after
Jose Callejon had added No 2, slammed a spectacular third from the
edge of the area four minutes before half-time.
Pepe was sent off just before the interval for a second
yellow card but any hopes Sevilla had of capitalising on their
numerical advantage were lost when Angel di Maria grabbed the
fourth.
Jesus Navas made it 4-1 with 20 minutes left but Sevilla's
Manu del Moral was sent off 15 minutes from time for bringing down
Xabi Alonso.
Ronaldo completed his hat-trick from the spot to take his
league tally for the year to 43. Hamit Altintop scored the sixth
before Alvaro Negredo added a late consolation for
Sevilla.
Ronaldo said: 'Those who criticise me don't know anything
about football.'
