With esteemed people having previously been nominated to
have their effigy burnt on bonfire night, it could be regarded as
an honour. The Edenbridge Bonfire Society in Kent has had figures
such as Russell Brand, Cherie Blair, and Gordon Brown sat on their
bonfires in years gone by.
With Rooneygate just about subsiding into history, the bad lad
from Liverpool will be once again be hitting the hot spots – but
only in the bonfire sense. A 49 foot replica Rooney will be loaded
with fireworks on November 5th, and will go off with a
bang.
Every year a celebrity is nominated by the society to be the
Bonfire Guy, and this year young Wayne is the star attraction. Not
for the first time in his life he will be the centre of attention.
The reasons for the choice have not been given by the society,
other than one its members said he really disliked football so he
was pleased see one of the games best as star of the show.
With a certain amount of social comment, the effigy of Rooney
will have a contract in one hand and a bunch of money in the other.
They have not tried to visualise his misdemeanours with two
prostitutes whilst his wife was pregnant.
Rooney played a fine game of brinkmanship when he recently told
Manchester United he would be leaving and the club was not good
enough. The reaction to that was a £180,000 a week contract over
five years. The Rooney Guy will be wearing a full Manchester Untied
kit when they light the blue touch paper on Friday. A crowd of
15,000 is expected at the event.
