Transfer request: Beckford has been linked with a
move to Newcastle United
Jermaine Beckford has submitted a written transfer
request in an attempt to force a move to Newcastle and fulfil his
dream of playing in the Barclays Premier League next
season.
Leeds’ top scorer, 26, who knocked Manchester United out of the
FA Cup on Sunday, is convinced Coca-Cola Championship leaders
Newcastle are bound for an immediate return to the top flight and
wants to join them in this transfer window.
Dismayed at seeing two Newcastle bids rejected, Beckford
reluctantly concluded he would have to request a transfer. He is
pinning his hopes on Leeds accepting a third Newcastle offer of
£1.5million.
Newcastle have failed with bids of £1m and £1.25m and have made
it clear to the Elland Road board that their latest attempt to
reach some common ground is as high as they can go.
Leeds have so far been holding out for more than £2m. A Leeds
statement said: ‘The player wants to leave Leeds United. However,
that will only be allowed to happen in the event that it is decided
to be in the best interests of Leeds United.
‘The best interests of Leeds United involve receiving both an
acceptable transfer fee and securing a suitable replacement.’
