No1: Paul Gascoigne
The build-up to Euro 96 saw England’s stars photographed on a
lads night out in Hong Kong. Gascoigne and Teddy Sheringham were
both snapped downing booze in a dentist’s chair. So when Gazza
scored THAT goal against Scotland at Wembley, there was only one
way to celebrate
No2: Eric Cantona
Who could forget Cantona’s brilliant chip against Sunderland in
the 1996-97 season? The Frenchman had beaten three men before
taking a return pass and lobbing the keeper from the edge of the
area. Cantona simply stopped and savoured the moment, with the
expression of a man that was the master of his art.
No3: Marco Tardelli
Scoring for your country in the World Cup final can see you
transform back into a child – just ask Tardelli. The Italian
followed up his strike in 1982 by going off on a memorable run,
screaming his own name like you would on the playground. And who
could blame him?
No4: Stuart Pearce
After missing a penalty to England out of the World Cup in 1990,
you could have forgiven Pearce for not fancying another crunch
shoot-out. But when England’s Euro96 quarter-final with Spain went
the distance, Psycho stepped up once again. The left-back smashed
the ball in from the spot to erase six years of pain – his
celebration went straight to the heart of every Englishman.
No5: Craig Bellamy
Bellers may have his detractors – but you can’t deny he has a
cracking sense of humour. The ‘Nutter with the Putter’ was in hot
water before Liverpool’s clash at Barcelona last season after an
alleged attack on team-mate John Arne Riise with a golf club.
Bookies responded by offering odds of 100-1 that the Welshman would
celebrate any goal with a swing – and sure enough, Bellamy did the
business.
No6: Peter Crouch
The lanky Liverpool frontman first cut the moves on a dancefloor
at the Beckham’s pre-World Cup bash last year. And they proved so
popular that Crouch decided to share them with the public,
celebrating his strikes against Hungary and Jamaica with some
body-popping. But the freaky dancer decided enough was enough and
announced he was retiring the move unless England won the World
Cup. Shame.
No7: Jurgen Klinsmann
Tottenham legend Klinsmann arrived in England with a reputation
for diving – and he proved it to be true on his debut. The German
scored a stunning header against Sheffield Wednesday and promptly
ran to the Spurs fans for a dive to remember.
No8: Roger Milla
Who could forget veteran Cameroon striker Milla setting the 1990
World Cup alight with his brilliant wiggle? The 38-year-old grabbed
four goals to guide the Africans out of the group stages – all
celebrated with his hilarious hip gyrating by the corner flag. The
stuff of legend.
No9: Temuri Ketsbaia
Newcastle forward Ketsbaia left fans concerned for his mental
health after he scored against Bolton in 1999. The Uncle Fester
lookalike ripped off his shirt, ran over to an advertising board
and started kicking lumps out of it.
No10: Facundo Sava
Remember Sava? He was Fulham’s Argentine striker who pulled on a
Zorro mask to celebrate each of six goals during a two-year spell
at Craven Cottage. Yep, that’s him – the complete oddball.
