Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink has revealed Didier Drogba is
injured and will not face Alan Shearer’s Newcastle this
weekend.
The Ivorian damaged an ankle in bizarre circumstances
during training but this blow has been offset by the news that
fellow striker Nicolas Anelka will play following a bruised toe
which sidelined the hit-man for France's most recent World Cup
qualifiers.
“Drogba did an exercise yesterday [Thursday] where he got
injured and hopefully he will be available for next Wednesday
[Champions League],” Hiddink said.
“We did some shooting practice and he then hit the ground with
his toe and this hurt his ankle.
“Anelka has been practicing the last few days and he has been
getting better and better so he is in.”
The decision to appoint Shearer as temporary manager at
Newcastle has been welcomed by Hiddink with the Dutchman believing
the former England striker is in a no-lose situation.
“You have to respect the decision by whoever is in charge. There
is always the reaction when something is happening in the club, it
was the same a little bit here,” added Hiddink.
“You make some decisions and you get a reaction within the club
and the team.
“Everyone knows their situation, so of course there will be a
reaction in the team and from the crowd. So we can expect a tight
game and a fighting spirit.
“I respect him [Shearer] very much because I know him as a
player - he is quite a personality. I cannot judge if he will stay
to the end of the season or longer.
"It is always good to have big players making the transfer to
managing."
