Sock robbers and the best footballing
insults

“Sock robbers, sock robbers, sock robbers,” the
Liverpool fans sang at Goodison Park last night, bombarding the
Bullens Road touchline with rolled-up balls of
footwear.
This was to taunt Evertonians about their proposed move to a
stadium in Kirkby, which is outside Liverpool city limits. Scouse
urban myth has it that, in the dark days of the 1960s and 1970s,
not even odd socks were safe on a Kirkby washing line from local
thieves. The legend has been taken up with a vengeance by the red
side of the city.
Last night's chant was just the latest footballing insult to be
offered up by supporters in the increasingly hostile atmosphere of
the Merseyside derby. But supporters' taunts are nothing new,
whether it be West Ham fans taunting the Kop by singing, "We've got
Di Canio, you've got our stereos" to the tune of Verdi's Rigoletto,
or Derby fans mocking Newcastle United supporters when shirt
sponsors Northern Rock went into meltdown, by singing, "Banked with
the Woolwich, you should have banked with the Woolwich".
As a Liverpool fan, its difficult admitting to liking
anything that comes from our old enemies down the east lancs road
but I had to laugh at this one sung by the Man U fans about Ji Sung
Park:
"Park, Park, wherever you may be,
You eat dogs in your country!
It could be worse, you could be Scouse,
Eating rats in your council house!"

I was rather amused, watching MoTD highlights of Arsenal
v. Chelsea, shortly after Ashley Coles extra-marital activities had
come to light, to hear the Gunner faithful chanting:
WHERE'S YOUR CHERYL GONE?
WHERE'S YOUR CHERYL GONE?

At Stamford Bridge a few years ago, an announcement came
over the tannoy: "Any homophobic chants will reject in ejection
from the ground, and a permanent ban from the stadium from the

Cue Arsenal fans: "duh duh duh, we're not homophobic, duh
duh duh, we just hate Cashley Cole.
