Lehmann reveals secret plan to contain Ronaldo

Lehmann: Knows Secret To Stopping Ronaldo

Germany's ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann says he knows a secret recipe to contain Portugal's chief play-maker Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of Thursday's Euro 2008 quarter-final.

"Ronaldo is a player who can make all the difference," said Lehmann, who has signed a one-year contract to play for VfB Stuttgart next season. "He is very pleasant to watch playing, but my former colleagues in the Arsenal defence found a very good recipe to stop him.

"I will not explain to you now how this recipe works, but I know how you can play effectively against him and I have already spoken to our defender Arne Friedrich about it."

Lehmann stressed 23-year-old Ronaldo, who was again voted the Premier League players' player of the year for the second season running, was not Portugal's only attacking weapon. "This team, unfortunately, has other good players, it is necessary that we are well positioned to avoid letting them get into positions to score goals," said Lehmann.

Should Thursday night's game in Basel be decided by penalties, Lehmann says he expects to be handed a detailed analysis of where the Portuguese players like to hit their spot-kicks prior to the game.

The German goalkeeper famously read notes on a piece of paper in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final penalty shoot-out with Argentina just prior to facing the South Americans' spot-kicks to intimidate his opponents.

The move paid off and Germany went through 4-2 on penalties. "I do not know where I will put this piece of paper, maybe I will slip it into my socks," he smiled."But I hope we will have secured victory before we come to a shoot-out."

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo has warned Jens Lehmann of Germany ...

CRISTIANO RONALDO has told Jens Lehmann: I’ll shut you up with my goals. Former Arsenal goalkeeper Lehmann says Arsene Wenger’s men had a secret formula for keeping Ron quiet. And the German No1 insists his side will use it to boot the winger and Portugal out of Euro 2008 in tomorrow’s quarter-final.

But Manchester United star Ronaldo hit back saying: “The reason he knows me is because I keep knocking goals past him. “We know his and Germany’s weak points too — and we are going to exploit them.

“This is a massive match. The team that plays better will win. I’m confident it’ll be us.” Ronaldo netted a penalty in United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal last season. Lehmann, who will join German side Stuttgart on a free transfer this summer, insists his Ronaldo dossier will prove crucial. He said: “Ronaldo is a player who can make all the difference if you let him. But my former team-mates found a way to stop him.

“This special tactic works. I’ve shared it with Germany and we’ll make it effective.” Ronaldo, 23, is still keeping tight-lipped on where he will play his football next season. But he says United’s rivals Chelsea have made a good move by appointing Phil Scolari as manager.

Ron added: “I’m not going to speak about my future because I’m focused on beating Germany. “I am sure Scolari will do well. I’ve been pulling his leg calling him ‘my rival’. But I wish him all the best for next year.”

Portugal 3:1 Germany.....portugal too strong

Portugal 3:1 Germany.....portugal too strong

This 'Germany tatic' will only work if he miraculously manage to stop Ronaldo once, just once.

It's a mind game and it might distract Ronaldo, too anxious to score a goal.

My picks :

3:1 Portugal if Portugal plays as they would have normally would plus pressure to crush Germany

LC SG

This is one tough match.

Germany players are very aggressive in nature while Portugal is more stylish.

If Portugal wants to win tonight then they should not be playing long ball as we all know German players are very tall.

But i feel the pace of Portugal could create a few problems for the Germans.

My call:

Portugal 2-1 Germany (",)

Ronaldo & Deco will shut the big mouth of Lehmann.

SCOLARI: GERMANY CLASH WON`T BE MY LAST

Outgoing Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari confirmed he would revert to the starting XI which won the first two Group A games for Thursday's Euro 2008 quarter-final against Germany before confidently predicting: "I don't expect it to be my last game".

Scolari also dismissed the efforts of Jens Lehmann to undermine the Portuguese by claiming Arsenal knew how to handle Ronaldo and he would be passing information to full-back Arne Friedrich.

Scolari said: “We always have these comments before great matches. They say Portugal are favourites, we say they’re favourites.

“We say they have this great player, they say we have that great player. It shouldn’t be taken seriously.” His most emotive words came when it was suggested defeat by Germany would signal the end of his six-year stint with Portugal and this could affect his players.

He said: “I know them, they will dedicate themselves more than they have done even if that is nearly impossible. “Anyway, I don’t expect it to be my last game. We’re booked into our hotel until after the semi-finals.

Portugal are the favourites no doubt... The Germans just played 2 days ago only and in a tough match somemore... So I think its a very difficult especially when the Portugal players have got a good rest after their 2nd game...

But Go Germany...
