Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he
has no plans to carry out a swoop for Hamburg defender Vincent
Kompany this summer.
Wenger had been expected to strengthen his back-line as he
looks to rework his side ahead of the 2008/09 term.
Centre-back Kompany, who signed for Hamburg from Anderlecht in
2006, has previously been linked with a move to Emirates Stadium,
with Wenger publicly expressing his interest in the
22-year-old.
But it appears the Frenchman has had a rethink over which
departments he needs to fortify during the transfer window.
"I have been interested in Vincent Kompany ever since he was 16,
but I am not interested in him this year," Wenger told The Sun.
"There is nobody I need for my team's
defensive department.
"I still follow Kompany's progress all the time and I know him
very, very well. But he will not be an Arsenal player next season -
and you can print that.
"I know all the good Belgian players. Arsenal are following a
number of them with great interest, although I won't name
names."
