Thaksin was at Goodison Park and made no secret of his displeasure.

Eriksson calls for improved showing from 'awful' City

Sven-Goran Eriksson is demanding an improvement from Manchester City in tonight's FA Cup third-round replay against West Ham United after what, by his standards, amounts to some forthright criticism of his team, describing their last performance as "awful" and accusing certain players of "not trying".

Eriksson rarely has anything bad to say about his own side but the former England manager was unhappy with Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Everton and particularly the frequency with which his players resorted to long punts out of defence. "We kicked it long 18 times in the first 45 minutes and I have told the players that's not our style of play," he said. "I told them, 'We need to play football.' It was awful watching that first half. We didn't even try."

Famous for never raising his voice in the dressing room, Eriksson's criticisms could stem from the fact that the club's owner, Thaksin Shinawatra, was at Goodison Park and made no secret of his own displeasure. "He had the same opinion as all of us - that it was awful," said Eriksson. "When I spoke to him the first thing he said was, 'I'm recovering from the shock'. Nobody liked it and, if you asked the players, they would say the same. It wasn't one or two or three players, it was all of them."

City have slipped to seventh in the Premier League and, having already been knocked out of the Carling Cup, they are under pressure for the first time this season. Eriksson, however, was encouraged by the goalless draw at Upton Park 11 days ago. "I think we were the better team," he said. His failure to bring in anyone during the transfer window, apart from the Mexican forward Nery Castillo, has been a source of frustration to supporters. It has since become apparent that Shinawatra's funds are not endless but Eriksson still hopes to do some business.

MAN CITY boss Sven Goran Eriksson is dreaming of Wembley - and an FA Cup final.

Eriksson's men overcame a tricky third-round tie thanks to Elano's second-half winner.

The Brazilian playmaker's brave header on 73 minutes saw off the Hammers.

And former England boss Eriksson, who never got to lead the Three Lions at Wembley, now faces a fourth-round trip to Championship side Sheffield United.

THE Toon Army got a glimpse of life under Kevin Keegan as the Magpies ran riot.

After The Messiah's reappointment as boss this afternoon, Newcastle fans packed into St James' Park.

And their team did not disappoint as Michael Owen opened the scoring after just eight minutes.

The England man fired home from close range after the Stoke defence failed to clear the ball.

Turkish star Emre was sent off for a reckless challenge before Brazilian defender Claudio Capapa headed home a second.

James Milner made it three on 68 minutes before Damien Duff added a fourth with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.

Liam Lawrence grabbed a late consolation for the Potters.

HAVANT AND WATERLOOVILLE pulled off the biggest result in their history to set up a dream fourth round tie with Liverpool at Anfield.

The minnows, who are currently mid-table in the Blue Square South, stunned the League One leaders by taking the lead after just four minutes.

Defender Gary Monk attempted to head Mo Harkin's cross clear but diverted the ball into his own net.

Jamie Collins made it two with a deflected shot on 25 minutes and Rocky Bapiste gave Havant a 3-0 lead with just 37 minutes gone.

Swansea pulled one back two minutes later through Guillem Bauza.

Jason Scotland gave Swans boss Roberto Martinez some hope of a comeback when he netted just after the break.

But Tom Jordan added a fourth for the non-league side to seal an incredible victory.

HEREFORD booked their spot in the fourth round with a 1-0 win over TRANMERE.

First half of the City vs Westham match was godawful. Probably the most boring first half ever, both teams all over the place but at least Westham tried while City just sit back and relax. Second half was far far far better, finally some speed in the game!

Anyway, City will be playing Westham again on Sunday for their EPL game, hopefully they'll play like the second half for the full 90 minutes instead of just 45.
