Martin O'Neill is ready to stump up £20million to lure
Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe and West Brom defender Curtis
Davies to Aston Villa.
The two international players have been high on O'Neill's shopping
list all summer - but the Irishman has been put off by their price
tags.
With time running out before Friday's transfer deadline, though,
O'Neill has conceded that he will have to pay 'over the odds' to
get his targets.
The Villa boss is confident a £9million bid will be enough to prise
England Under-21 centre-back Davies from the Baggies, having failed
with a cash-plus-player deal when Gary Cahill turned down a move to
The Hawthorns.
And The Star claims O'Neill is ready to offer £11million for Defoe,
who is behind Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov in the pecking
order at White Hart Lane and also faces competition from £16million
new boy Darren Bent.
O'Neill is hoping the promise of regular first-team action at Villa
Park, which would improve Defoe's chances of catching Steve
McClaren's eye, and the promise of a push for European football
will be enough to get his man.
