Rob Styles axed after Liverpool blunder

Red rage: Liverpool's Steve Finnan (above left), Jamie Carragher and Xabi Alonso surround referee Styles after the penalty award

An impressive performance by Liverpool was spoiled by a poor penalty decision by Rob Styles. In the 62nd minute Florent Malouda appeared to jump into Steve Finnan and Styles pointed to the spot. I can only assume he thought Finnan had blocked Malouda from challenging for the ball. It was a crucial decision and given without an appeal from Chelsea. Styles will have had a long drive home.

Rob Styles has been dropped from the referees list for wrongly giving Chelsea a penalty at Liverpool. The official will not take charge of a Premier League game this weekend after his bosses ruled he made a mistake and apologised on his behalf to a furious Rafael Benitez.

Rob Styles adds to a penalty controversy by apparently booking Michael Essien twice - without sending him off

Styles made several other mistakes and appeared to show Michael Essien a second yellow card after booking John Terry in the second half. He raised the card twice, the second time with the midfielder immediately in front of him and the defender nowhere near.

Essien thought he was off but Styles insists he was showing the card to Terry.

the Bear SG

uhh.. will the yellows be nullified?

stellazio SG

Yellows cannot be nullifed i think.

Only reds can be appealed if i remembered correctly.

the Bear SG

that sucks.. a few were mystery yellows..

i mean, Terry being on the field deserves a yellow immediately... but really.. what the heck was it for? Laughing

stellazio SG

Probably for swearing too much till he took it as dissent. But then again, if that was the case, then many others should have been booked as well. Laughing

dragg SG

unlucky liverpool.

Sad

used SG

one mistake like that and he is axed

then wad abt the ref who disallowed pedro mendes goal against manu at old trafford when the ball clearly crossed the line??? it clearly shows how biased the FA are towards the big teams

dragg SG

the linesman that disallowed the goal fulham scored against boro was also axed.

Agenda SG

should give liverpool the additional 2 points and let chelski keep their 1 point.. at least both sides will not complain.. much

Should return the istanbul CL cup to Chelsea, the one which Liverpoo took illegally!

Should return last season EPL title to The Blues cos it should never be in the hands of Divers.

Should also override the last season CL champions to Chelsea cos they also denied by biased Refs.

THAT WAY EVERYTHING CAN BE FAIR & JUST!

KrU SG

Aren't Liverpool and Chelsea big teams?

zocoss SG

Maybe there was a big difference... That referee probably had a good excuse cos Mendes took his shot like in his own half or something like from the middle... It was a counter attack move and that ref was way behind him... that said, means that ref had to see something like from 2/3 away from a 100 metres wide field while running to get back as well... and the linesman was not that close either as he too was running back from the upper half of the field when it happened... And as they say, when in doubt, cannot give. Styles's case was much different, he was just right infront of the incident and he seem to have made other mistakes in the match and not just one... Anyway, that case happened many years ago already... New people have taken over not just the FA but i think the referee official too... Smile

Linesman pays for Fulham goal-line error

Ian Gosling, the linesman who failed to give Fulham's equaliser in their 2-1 defeat against Middlesbrough on Saturday, has been withdrawn from this weekend's Premiership rota.

David Healy appeared to have scored in the dying moments but stand-in referee Andy D'Urso and his assistant Gosling failed to spot his shot had clearly been carried over the line by goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
