David Trezeguet surprised much of the football world by
choosing to extend his contract at Juventus and he has now
explained the motivations behind his decision to French football
magazine Equipe.
The French international striker looked a cert to leave Turin on
one of the first trains out after he made an offensive gesture
towards the club president following his goal in a defeat by La
Spezia on the last day of the season.
Although he declined to comment on the derogatory hand gesture,
Trezeguet looked to use the interview to further undo the mercenary
image he had been increasingly tagged with.
"More importantly than money issues, I needed sporting guarantees
as I was not prepared to wait four years in order for the squad to
be competitive enough to win a major trophy, said the
29-year-old.
Everybody wanted me but it was always my first desire to remain,
just like the rest of my teammates, he added.
The Equipe, however, raised doubts over whether Trezegol was
really in such high demand and even went as far as suggesting that
Juventus did not receive a single serious offer for the player that
they valued at 10 million Euro.
