Kaiser confirms Owen United deal

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has confirmed that Owen Hargreaves will leave the club for Manchester United this summer.

The England international has long been a target for Red Devils chief Sir Alex Ferguson, with Bayern fending off interest from Old Trafford last summer.

Hargreaves has made no secret of his desire to move to Old Trafford and in the face of renewed interest from United and the midfielder's desire to move on, Bayern's stance has softened in recent weeks.

Bayern are planning an overhaul of their playing staff after falling well short in the Bundesliga and a reported £17million deal will hand the club a substantial transfer kitty.

German magazine Spiegel reported on its website a deal had been agreed and Beckenbauer has confirmed the 26-year-old will head to England this summer.

"Owen is leaving," Beckenbauer told Germany's DSF sports television network. "That was the player's wish.

"It's a good match and it's also a good deal financially."

Seriously, am I alone or does anyone else think we're overpaying for players?

I personally can't believe £18.6m on Michael Carrick and now £17m on Owen Hargreaves is money well-spent even by the standards of today's inflated transfer market.

I mean, even after taking into account of today's transfer market, Carrick and Hargreaves look ridiculous at the sort of prices they're signed at.

United passed up the chance to sign Ronaldinho for 21m pounds a couple of seasons ago and we happily splash out 18.6m for Carrick and 17m for Hargreaves. It just looks ridiculous...

Not at all, This is the going rate now... If you want to stay among the top clubs you have to be willing to spend. And only with such players will they be able to continue attracting huge crowds to their matches and maintain the yearly profits.

Looking back, i would say Carrick was a bargain... He probably played more than 3/4 of united's championship winning season... and selling John Obi for $16m was a great deal when they only paid $4m for him a month earlier... Mr. Green

Laughing The thought of using Chelsea as a benchmark never crossed my mind - any tom, dick or harry would look a bargain if you're benchmarking the transfer market by their standards...

Seriously though, I can't agree we're getting quality for that kind of money - 18.6m and 17m for Carrick and Hargreaves respectively just don't convince me.

Cristiano Ronaldo for 12m and Ronaldinho for 21m are what I'd call bargains - of course, that said, I'm speaking with the benefit of hindsight here.
