. . . VS

Chelsea head up to Liverpool next week after missing a clear chance to kill off their semi-final tie at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. Joe Cole's well-taken goal after 29 minutes was the only one of the first leg, where Chelsea dominated the opening half but failed to finish off a Liverpool side that began far too cautiously and conceded all the early initiative.

Liverpool were far more effective in the second half, especially after Peter Crouch replaced Craig Bellamy in attack after 53 minutes.

But they were denied by some typically resolute Chelsea defending and one outstanding save from goalkeeper Peter Cech, who dived full length to save a sizzling Steven Gerrard volley.

Chelsea travel to Tuesday's second leg in better shape than two years ago, However, Chelsea lost 2-0 on their last visit to Anfield in the Premier League in January -- which was also their last league defeat this season.

Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack and defender Ricardo Carvalho will both miss next Tuesday's Champions League semi-final second leg against Liverpool and could be out of action until next season. Ballack has had an ankle operation after being injured during last Sunday's Premier League 0-0 draw against Newcastle. He missed the 1-0 first leg win against Liverpool last Wednesday and had an operation on Friday, the club said.

Portugal defender Carvalho went down after a tackle by Bolton's Kevin Davies in the first half of Chelsea's 2-2 draw on Saturday and was substituted by Frank Lampard. "It's bad...it's his knee," Mourinho said of Carvalho. "He's been our best defender the whole season. It's as simple as that," the Portuguese coach said. "We lost in Liverpool in the Premiership without him."

Chelsea's last Premier League defeat was by Liverpool in January.

Gattuso fit for United, Maldini doubts remain

Italy World Cup-winning midfielder Gennaro Gattuso should be available for AC Milan's Champions League semi-final return match with Manchester United on Wednesday - but veteran defender Paolo Maldini is a possible absentee.

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti revealed the team news after the 1-0 win at Torino yesterday - a game in which neither Maldini nor Gattuso featured. 'The only player in doubt today is Maldini but we still have four days to get him fit,' said Ancelotti in remarks reported by www.gazzetta.it. 'Gattuso will definitely be available, however.'

Both men picked up injuries in the first leg in Manchester, won 3-2 by United. Ancelotti was impressed by United's form which yesterday took them closer to regaining the Premiership title with a 4-2 win over Everton on a day when Chelsea drew 2-2 with Bolton.

'They (United) are doing well in the championship and have extended their lead over Chelsea so they will have less pressure than they would have had with a bad result,' said Ancelotti. 'But a Champions League semi-final is something special. It will be a game where we have to play at our best without losing concentration but with the right level of intensity and serenity.

'If we play like we did for an hour at Old Trafford we can do it,' said Ancelotti whose team led 2-1 in the first leg before two second-half Wayne Rooney goals gave United the win.

LIVERPOOL DEFENDER Daniel Agger believes Didier Drogba 'definitely' dives and wants stronger officiating when Chelsea take a 1-0 lead to Anfield for the Champions League semi-final return on Tuesday. Agger remonstrated with the Ivory Coast international after being given a difficult time at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Drogba, who has 31 goals this season, created Joe Cole's first-half winner when he turned Agger, and crossed from the right. Yet Agger denied the striker caused him the biggest problems he has encountered since his £5.8million move from Brondby in January 2006.

Agger did agree that Drogba, who admitted last year that 'sometimes I dive', goes down easily when tackled. 'Yes, I definitely do,' he said, 'but that's his style and that's the way he is.' He added he was reluctant to criticise the referee, Markus Merk, although he did imply that the official had favoured Drogba and Chelsea. 'It is easy to see from the outside,' he said in reply to whether he and Jamie Carragher had been given any breaks by the German referee.

Chelsea's last defeat this season was the 2-0 in the Premiership at Liverpool in January. That afternoon Jose Mourinho selected a defence that featured midfielder Michael Essien and full-back Paulo Ferreira in place of injured central defenders John Terry and Ricard Carvalho.

Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko has been ruled out of tomorrow's Champions League semi-final second leg at Liverpool. The Ukraine international has not travelled with the squad and joins Ricardo Carvalho and Michael Ballack on the sidelines.

However, Arjen Robben is included in the squad after making a quicker-than-expected recovery from knee ligament damage. Mmidfielder Michael Essien available after a one-match European ban, Carvalho is ruled out with a knee problem, which could see Essien partnering John Terry at centre-back, while Ballack has had an ankle operation which will rule him out for at least 10 days.

Didier Drogba is one yellow card away from missing a potential final in Athens if Chelsea can hold onto their first-leg lead, while it is expected that Khalid Boulahrouz could come into defence.

Liverpool expect to have full-back Steve Finnan back following a neck injury for the clash. Finnan has missed the last four matches, although on Saturday at Portsmouth he was officially rested as boss Rafael Benitez made seven changes from the side which lost at Stamford Bridge in the first leg.

Those seven - Jose Reina, Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano, Dirk Kuyt and John Arne Riise - all look certain to start, while Benitez will also consider using Peter Crouch in the starting XI.

Teams:

Liverpool : Reina, Finnan, Arbeloa, Carragher, Hyypia, Agger, Riise, Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko, Pennant, Zenden, Bellamy, Kuyt, Mascherano, Crouch, Dudek, Gonzalez.

Chelsea : Cech, A Cole, Makelele, Terry, Essien, Ferreira, Boulahrouz, Shevchenko, Lampard, J Cole, Drogba, Mikel, Geremi, Bridge, Wright-Phillips, Diarra, Kalou, Cudicini.
