Craig Bellamy is desperate to get back into first-team action to give himself the chance of facing Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final first leg next week. The Wales striker's knee injury has kept him out of Liverpool's last two Barclays Premiership games, the 0-0 draw at Manchester City and Wednesday's 2-0 home victory over Middlesbrough.

Now the 27-year-old has his focus set on being fit to face Wigan on Saturday at Anfield in a game that, if Liverpool win, will secure a top-four finish and a Champions League spot. Bellamy said: "The injury was the wrong kick in the wrong place at the wrong time. But it is getting better with each day that passes and I should be fit before long.

"I hope to be available for the Wigan game to give me a chance of playing my way into contention for the Chelsea game." But first Bellamy aims to focus on Wigan, a team desperate for points in their battle against relegation and likely to concentrate on defence at Anfield.

"Not many teams come here and open themselves up to make a game of it," added Bellamy, a summer signing from Blackburn last year. "Not many teams do that at Anfield because they know what happens to teams that do. "And coming up against that kind of blanket defence has been fairly new to me this season.

Xabi Alonso should have recovered from the thigh injury that kept him out against Middlesbrough to face Wigan and Steve Finnan is expected to return at right-back.

MILAN BUOYANT AT RIO INJURY

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti did not even attempt to disguise his glee at the news that Rio Ferdinand will miss out on the Champions League semi-final. Ferdinand joins Gary Neville, Patrice Evra and Mikael Silvestre on the sidelines, leaving United without the whole of their first-choice back line for the game against Milan.

That means that United will line up with a back four of Gabriel Heinze, Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Darren Fletcher at right-back. Midfielders Ji-Sung Park and Kieran Richardson will also miss the Old Trafford game, along with striker Louis Saha.

"Rio is a very important player, and they are also missing the other centre back Vidic. It could be a problem for Ferguson to line up a pair of inexperienced defenders," said Ancelotti. His own problems have been eased with the inclusion of Brazilian goalkeeper Dida in the squad that travelled to Manchester.
