Mourinho backing Benfica against Man Utd

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho admits he will be rooting for Benfica to overcome Manchester United in their Champions League Group F clash.

United need a point to ensure they reach the knockout stage of the tournament but Mourinho warned Sir Alex Ferguson and his men that Benfica are capable of winning at Old Trafford.

And in a veiled dig at Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, Mourinho said it would not be so easy for him to 'get one of his penalties'.

Ronaldo was at the centre of more controversy at the weekend when he earned United a penalty in their victory over Middlesbrough even though replays clearly showed there had been no contact between him and goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

Mourinho's Porto side knocked United out of the competition at the last-16 stage two years ago when Costinha's last-minute goal gave them a 3-2 aggregate success.

Now Mourinho believes Benfica can deliver a similar knockout blow to United.

Mourinho said: 'Benfica is a team that when you watch them you don't know what is going to happen.

'The last game they were magnificent against Sporting Lisbon. They beat them 2-0 away and played very well. Players were performing at the highest level and the team looked very solid.

'If they go to Manchester and play at their highest level they can do it. Of course, it is not easy, but they can do it.

'They know Ronaldo well and how to deal with him. So it won't be easy for him to get one of his penalties. Benfica have got a chance.

'I will be rooting for them for sure, if I didn't I could not go home.'

I'd love it if Arsenal and United were beaten says Mourinho

Jose Mourinho yesterday admitted he would "love it" if Benfica and Porto were to eliminate Manchester United and Arsenal from the competition tomorrow night.

United are at home to Benfica, and Arsenal, away to Porto, both must avoid defeat to secure their path to the second phase. Despite admitting that both sides' elimination would worsen his team's Premiership prospects, the Chelsea manager did not hide his delight at the thought of the Portuguese representatives winning both ties.

Mourinho described the penalties awarded to United (one) and Arsenal (two) at the weekend as "nothing new"

When asked if he would be rooting for his compatriots. He said "I would love them to win, for sure. If Manchester United went out it would negatively affect our fight for the Premier League because if you go to the next stage of the Champions League you have big matches coming; it's top-level football.

"If Manchester United and Arsenal go into the Uefa Cup maybe they will decide to rest one or two players because it's an easy competition to play in.

HENRY AND ROSICKY OUT FOR GUNNERS

Czech midfielder Tomas Rosicky misses the Champions League trip to Porto on Wednesday after picking up a problem affecting his groin and hamstring during Saturday's 3-0 Barclays Premiership victory over Tottenham.

Philippe Senderos returns to the squad after missing the north London derby through suspension while William Gallas is still out with his thigh injury. Abou Diaby (ankle) and Lauren (knee) are longer-term absentees.

Thierry Henry, who would have been unavailable for the clash anyway due to suspension, is also suffering from a neck injury that could keep him out until the new year.

Team (from): Lehmann, Eboue, Toure, Djourou, Senderos, Clichy, Ljungberg, Fabregas, Gilberto, Hleb, Van Persie, Almunia, Walcott, Adebayor, Baptista, Hoyte, Song, Flamini.

I am only worry about Arsenal tomorrow... so many out! Rosicky, Gallas, Lauren & Henry... all first team players... cos they are taking on a team that is in one of the dirtiest league in Europe... Neutral

Tho Porto may have improve a little on their antics since that "Special one" left but that are still a dirty team...

So Arsenal better beware... Confused
