SO SORE AT FLOP O'LEARY
11 October 2006

THOMAS SORENSEN last night revealed he was ready to quit Aston Villa because David O'Leary had plunged morale at the club to an all time low.

The Danish keeper was so fed up under former boss O'Leary and ex-chairman Doug Ellis he told his agent to find him a new club.

Only their departures and the arrival of new boss Martin O'Neill and owner Randy Lerner persuaded him not to walk out.

"Last season everything was hopeless at Villa," said Sorensen. "If things had not turned around I would be playing for another club."

The players deserve little credit actually. Had they been determined to stop the rot they would have done so even under David O'Leary. The fact that he failed to improve Villa's position points to a lack of motivation skills and the player's own low morale and lack of unity.

O'Neill has been known as an excellent motivator and his 'pied piper' acolyte is not unjustified. I've always held him in high regard and Villa made the best buy when they signed him.

When a club screws up, both sides - players and coach - share the blame. The coach is of course the convenient target since sacking one person is easier than sacking a starting XI. Cool

England should have got Martin O'Neill instead of McClaren... After all, he is proven and has a good track record of winning and leading average clubs too high positions!

McClaren on the other hand... has only Middlesbrough to show for... Rolling Eyes

they want to be english. Laughing

i think martin o’neill’s bubble will burst soon….

The man who was death SG

why issit when a club screw up, both sides, players and manager take the blame and when a club do well only the manager takes the credit??

the players deserves credit as well, there's got to be quality in the players to do well or else even the best motivator can't do anything if there's no quality in the team at all.

stellazio SG

no what, i see alot of the big 4 plaeyrs getting praised. its just that villa was so horrible last season with almost the same batch of players, martin o neill is getting praised firsthand. u see how many players come out to say how they wanted to leave under o leary last season?why so big difference now??

The man who was death SG

i know the big difference, i know o'neill deserves most of the credit but it seems to be overshadowing what the players have done too. there was also a lot of injuries last season, this has to be taken into account too.

i feel angel deserves more praise than he has right now, he's finally getting back to the old angel three years ago, his link up play is excellent.

stellazio SG

geneerally the press are biased. Laughing

and maybe its not martin's way to praise his players publicily.

You are totally correct when you said "he's finally getting back to the old angel three years ago"... This is precisely what O'neill has brought to the club, the fact that he can make not just 1, not just 2 but a number of players who have been there for the past few years suddenly play to their potential.

I belief a lot of effort was put into it to turn the club around. And for this, he deserve the most credit. But of course, the club on the whole will benefit the most.
