Alessandro Del Piero has claimed that he turned down the chance
to join Manchester United in the summer.
Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to bring the World Cup winner to Old
Trafford after Juventus suffered relegation due to a match fixing
conviction.
However Del Piero decided to remain with the Bianconeri, and the
club's all-time record goalscorer has gone on to make his 500th
appearance for the club in Serie B this season.
Now the cultured forward has revealed how he resisted the lure of
United to try and secure his legacy at Stadio Delle Alpi.
"It's all true. I could have been a Red Devil," said Del Piero in
The Sun.
"Manchester United representatives contacted me in August.
"At first I was flattered, but I never really thought of leaving
Juventus.
"I've been playing 13 years in this club and I want to finish my
career here. I'm sure Alex Ferguson understood my decision."
The United boss did not manage to strengthen his attack in the
summer, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has since returned to full fitness
and the club have also recruited Henrik Larsson on loan.
