Tottenham coach Martin Jol was delighted his side avoided a
potential banana skin against Southend on Wednesday.
The Shrimpers had conquered Manchester United in the Carling Cup
and pushed Spurs all the way before Jermain Defoe settled the
outcome.
Jol was complimentary of Southend's display at White Hart Lane, but
felt on the balance on play his side deserved to secure a
semi-final place.
"All credit to them, they made it difficult for us. They looked a
good team," Jol told ITV.
"I felt it (Defoe's goal) could have been marginally offside. I
would not have been happy if I were him (Southend boss Steve
Tilson).
"On the other hand we had four or five chances.
"In the end we deserved it, but they made it very difficult for
us.
"We lacked a little bit of creativity. I can't say that we created
a lot.
"We're very happy to be in the semis."
