When airline hegdes fuel mean they are buying fuel in advance,
at a fixed price, for future use. This is usually done so when
airlines expected jet fuel cost would increase to reduce their
operating cost.
An instance would be when crude oil price increased during 2005
-2006 which directly/indirectly increased price for jet fuel.
