Gilberto: Disappointed by Wenger snub

The 30-year-old led Arsene Wenger's side for much of last season in the absence of the injured Thierry Henry, who has since left the club.

And the Brazilian has revealed his shock when he found out Wenger had opted to give the armband to defender William Gallas - via the internet.

"Of course I was surprised because I was captain all last season when Henry didn't play, and after his move to Barcelona I naturally thought I would be this time," He told the Daily Star.

"Arsene is the manager and it is his decision and I have to accept that. Life goes on and I will get on with my job like I always have.

"But I was surprised he didn't speak to me about his decision. He had the time to do it because I was at the training ground before it was made public.

"He didn't say anything to me and I just found out about it that evening when I saw it on the Arsenal website.

"I wasn't upset about not being captain, but I was about the way I learnt about it."

He added: "I will give the same commitment to the club that I always have. This is an important season."

I knew this would happen one day. i sympathize with gilberto. even though he dont scream much,i think he led a good example to his teammates.

i also don't understand why he chose gallas?

to make him happy?

felirox SG

stop him frm moaning i guess? if he moans, just sell him off. i believe senderos would do much a better job. even though he suck in defending at times,at least he doesnt moan..not like our new captain.

vishnusux SG

somehow i think gallas can give us more offense than gilberto...gilberto is a very defensive player and he is prob more inclined to lead the team to defending. With gallas as captain, we might be able to at least try to solve the problem of insufficient goals Smile

glacer SG

Gallas is quite important to the team right now. Firstly, Senderos does not have enough first team experience. Secondly, Senderos is quite complacent at times. Thirdly, Gallas is much faster than Senderos. And lastly, Gallas can clear and head the ball better than Senderos.

thongs SG

but the thing is senderos is younger than gallas, he can learn and grow, giving the armband to someone who had came to arsenal for only 1 year aint a wise choice

glacer SG

I think it's because Gallas is a important part of the team right now as Senderos is still not ready and Arsenal cannot afford to lose both Gallas and Henry at the same time so Wenger handed him the armband to make him stay. Maybe Wenger know that both Gilberto Silva and Toure will understand him Rolling Eyes

At least Gallas is louder than his precedents, Henry and Gilberto.

Senderos is NOT tt good, just like another Pascal Cygan, prone to jitteries n concentration lapse, he was out on the tfr list, remember?
Johan Djourou is much better but nw on loan... Sad
Gilberto is a good captain i agree, but he is not able to fire up the team like Gallas who has some "Tony Adams" spirit/class.
Also to retain Gallas who is keen to depart after Henry left...
Look out for Bakary Sagna, better right back than Justin Hoyte
If you did notice, Arsenal's back four is almost French back four[short of Lillian Thuram], Bakary Sagna, Gael Clichy is for the future French squad... to replace Willy Sagnol n the unpredictable Jean-Alain Boumsong/Eric Abidal/Pascal Chimbonda

Weird .. Gilberto should be the next captain

x2... senderos reali not gd.... he might be a better player next time IF he willing to learn n improve... as for gallas as captain is relai a gamble by wenger... i would've chosen gilberto too.. but gallas character can fire up the team n he has the hunger for success... hope he will lead the team to big success tis season...
