Chinese Tea Houses in Singapore

There are not many places to have a nice private tea session in Singapore. I only know of a handful of tea houses that provides such a service. Please add to the list if you are aware of any. Once this list is complete, we can start adding more information on whether they have tea lessons, dining, etc.. Here goes.....

1. Tea Chapter - Neil Road?
2. Yixing Xuan - Tanjong Pagar
3. Tea Joy - Bras Basah
4. ?? - Temple Street

Yah. Guess so. We tend to spend too much time in coffee places like starbucks. Missing the real thing.. Sad

I think there is a more deep-seated issue here then just 'not so cultured' enough to visit teahouse...

IMHO visiting teahouse has nothing to do with being cultured. Pin anyone who sits in a teahouse sipping tea and quizz them about tea and one will most probably come up with empty answers.

I think it has more to do with our cultural preference and orientation - in short, the 'hipness' of things : hanging out in coffee places is hip, sharing a bottle of expensive wine is socially cool, puffing on a havana is suavy; drinking tea - CHINESE TEA! - is well, something cina. Something old folks do.

Many friends from the west I know come into contact with Chinese culture through tea; we seem to be going the other direction - it is more 'with the crowd' to say 'one skinny latte decaf and go easy on the forth' then 'this tea relates to me a nuance that is lasting in the back of the throat, unrolling sweetness to the tip of the tongue'...

We are cultural, only we are embracing the western canon with open arms, and sweeping our asian heritage under the carpet. Mr. Green

5. Tea Bone Zen Mind (Cha Gu Chan Xin) - behind Raffles Hotel

I think there used to be a teahouse in Margret Drive in a spa resort just next to the prison there (kinda weird to have a spa and a teahouse huh?), run by Liu Kaixin, but I think it didn't hold up...

6. Time of Tea, #02-44, Lucky Plaza - The store has been there for sometime now, but I think they are relocating soon. Tea appreciation classes available, but be forewarned, the place is constantly bustling with Japanese ladies wanting to know more about tea! Wink

7. Singapore Teahouse, 2 locations: a. Basement 2, Takashimaya, corner of the food section; b. Basement, Bugis Junction, middle section of walkway. Just got news that they brought in some Old Banzhang tea...haven't got a chance to go sample it! - BTW they have a 3rd location in Suntec Tower 4, outside Carrefour, but the place is just too small and noisy to seriously have tea...Singapore Teahouse used to conduct classes on tea at the Esplanade store, but since they relocated to Suntec, I'm not so sure if these classes are stil available... 8. Wang San Yang - The main store is located somewhere onthe ground floor in Fook Hai Complex (or Hong Lim complex - I always get lost in that area...)

9. Bai Xing Chun (?) somewhere in Mosque street, one of the oldest tea vendors in Singapore. Not much of a place for tea, but frequent visitors and friends go there to hang out...I don't think they have classes...they just sell.

10. Nan Yuan Tea Trading - located on the 2nd level of Clifford Centre, they also have a counter in Basement of Parkway Parade. One of the lady boss doesn't see eye to eye with me so I hardly go there now... Rolling Eyes

11. Liu Xiang - located in Liang Court, used to be in the Basement, but moved upstairs to the 2nd level (I think, haven't been there for sometime...). Tea Classes are available...

I would vitto that! I think we can count the place in...the teahouses/ shops I mentioned do not all have classes too...perhaps F2's no. 4 ?? Temple Street is D'Art Tea Station at #63 Temple Street?

BTW, me won't be able to pop in at Temple Street these 2 weeks, see you guys after 20th Sep! Wink
