KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Ngo Thi Kim Thoa came to Malaysia
looking for love and thought she found it when she was introduced
to a businessman through a licensed matchmaking agency.
However, her dreams turned into a nightmare two weeks into her
marriage when the 47-year-old man decided that his 22-year-old
Vietnamese wife did not meet his expectations.
One of his grouses was the language barrier. Another was his
wife's preference for traditional Vietnamese attire.
On March 30, the businessman returned Ngo to the agency.
He, however, held her passport and was seeking a refund of
RM13,800 from the agency, the sum which he claimed to have paid for
Ngo.
The agency turned to the MCA Public Services and Complaints
Department for assistance.
Department head Datuk Michael Chong criticised the businessman's
behaviour.
"These women are human beings, not merchandise that come with a
money-back guarantee," he said at Wisma MCA yesterday.
Chong reminded the man that Ngo's passport belonged to the
Vietnamese government.
He added the husband must help Ngo return to her homeland.
