Depending on how many days you've got to spare. 2 weeks and
700-800 bucks enough for laos. Just get return ticket from
thailand, go there via boat, no need visa then slowly go round the
island by road or boat. food is crap but the scenery is fantastic.
very romantic also. you can white water raft, kayak, shop, do
tonnes of things in laos and make tonnes of other traveling friends
there!
