MENDELSSOHN Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 Italian
The composition of Stravinskys Pulcinella Suite marked the turning
point in his career, leading him to the neo-classical style which
was to dominate his output for several decades; although based on
some of Pergolesis music, it featured Stravinskys signature use
of modern harmonies and rhythmic modification. Mendelssohns most
popular symphony captures the many moods of a tourist wandering
across colourful Italy; ironically it was never published in his
lifetime. Two rarely-heard works for bassoon are also showcased
Webers Andante and Rondo ongarese and Elgars Romance, a piece
that portrays the bassoon as poet and singer.
