Singapore still needs honest, competent leaders to take
nation forward: DPM Teo
SINGAPORE: The Republic still needs honest and competent leaders
to take the nation forward in the next phase of our nation
building, said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean on Sunday (Aug
2) at a National Day Dinner in Eunos, where he was the Guest of
Honour.
"Where there is wrong-doing, one must be upfront, admit one's
mistakes and take the appropriate actions to put things right,”
said Mr Teo, who is also the MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. “This is
how we ensure that our system remains clean and we continue to have
good competent leaders to serve Singapore. And this is a critical
factor for Singapore to succeed."
The Government may sometimes have to take difficult decisions
and not everyone may benefit from each policy to the same extent,
but the Government always tries to do the best for Singaporeans,
said Mr Teo.
To do so, the Government must listen to the views of the public
and, where necessary, refine policies to meet the changing needs
and aspirations of Singaporeans, he added.
The Deputy Prime Minister was joined at the dinner by former
People's Action Party Chairman, Lim Boon Heng and former Senior
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Aljunied GRC MP Zainul
Abidin Rasheed.
Also present were candidates the PAP could field against the
Worker's Party, which included branch chairman for the Eunos ward,
Mr Chua Eng Leong; branch chairman for Bedok Reservoir, Mr Victor
Lye; and Mr Shamsul Kamar, the likely next chairman for the Kaki
Bukit branch.
The dinner was attended by about 1,500 residents living in
Aljunied GRC.
