Okay, that's an even more punishment for him.
For those of you who think his punishment is that light, please
consider that he has to:
1. Pay a $3000 fine,
2. Do 3 months community service
3. Have his scholarship benefits terminated for one semester
All that for doing something which strictly speaking
wasn't criminal. Yeah, he p*ssed off a lot of
Singaporeans, but at least it was a remark that targeted
Singaporeans in general and not specific racial or religious groups
(in which case, the remarks would have been far more damaging, and
the Racial Harmony or Sedition Acts could've been tossed at
him).
Heck, that A*Star scholar who pranced around naked in Holland V
got away with a smaller fine.
Sure, he could've gotten expelled and deported, but do consider
that his punishment is not exactly small potatoes either.
Not trying to defend his actions; all I'm saying is, it's not
exactly accurate to say that he got away with it with a slap on the
wrist.
Likewise the sanctions applied to him are not criminal
penalties. If Singaporean bond-breakers who pay their contractual
dues are shamed, the same high standards must apply to him in the
name of equity, harsh or not, foreigner or not.
