MANILA, Philippines (AP) - A Singaporean terrorist known as
Abdullah Ali, who uses the guerrilla name Muawiyah, was among the
three killed by the Philippine military at dawn on Thursday, in one
of the most significant successes against militants on their
southern island stronghold.
The military also said it killed two other most-wanted leaders
of the Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah
Islamiyah. They included Abu Sayyaf leader Umbra Jumdail, a
Filipino and Malaysian Zulkifli bin Hir, also known as Marwan.
Muawiyah carried a US$500,000 (S$627,000) reward for his killing
or capture while his counterpart, Marwan, considered a top leader
of the regional terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah, carried a US$5
million reward which was both put up by the United States (US)
government.
Military spokesman Colonel Marcelo Burgos said the military
carried out the attack early on Thursday morning in Parang town on
Jolo Island, the stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf and their allies from
the Indonesian-based terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah.
