Ris Low: The Kiasu & Kiasi of being Singaporean

In a recent interview with Malaysian paper The Star, disgraced beauty queen Ris Low called Singaporeans 'kiasu', 'kiasi' people who are heartless and unwilling to help people in need.

Among the many criticisms she levelled at Singaporeans is the opinion that Singaporeans have no compassion for those with a past, citing her own case as the perfect example. She claims nearly every beauty queen has been mercilessly criticised by 'cowards hiding behind their computer screens' who 'bully' them and say they are 'ugly'.

She also complained that Singaporeans are unwilling to help when others are in need, and that 'when you need help, everyone just stares and does nothing."

She also said that 'the pace of life here is very fast, everyone is very stressed, very kiasu and very kiasi'. According to her, Singaporeans are always attracted to long queues, even if they do not know what they are queuing for.

Stupid girl. She is Singaporean isn't she.

Singaporean will help, a helpless person in distress, but will not assist if the one in distress is still standing and capable. Many accident victims have passerby coming to their aid. Kudos to our taxi drivers and motorcyclists.

The queue part is unnecessary for her to mention because she got it off YouTube.

Yes she was a credit card thief.

She can whine here in Singapore, we'd listen to her, and empathise with her. But what she did is not excusable. She is in for more rotten eggs in her face.

Kiasi, kiasu attributes are also partly due to PAP policies, She did not bring those factors up. I am disappointed with Ris Low. Her analysis of Singapore society is poor and lacking in substance.

“I would say the generation of the ‘50s and ‘60s took the plunge into politics without ever calculating the costs of the risk and the benefits to be gained. They were driven by ideology. Today’s generation has no culture and averse to taking political risk. Really, an interest in politics is very necessary for the future. But I cannot blame the present generations, because they see the heavy-handed response by the government to dissenting views, even though they know that these matters involve their daily lives.

So the result is that we have produced a younger generation who are meek and therefore very calculating. They are less independent-thinking and lack in initiative. It does not bode well for the emergence of future leaders in politics and business. Robots and computers can be programmed or if you like, can be trained. But the trouble, of course, is that computers lack soul and what we need in Singapore is soul. Because it is soul that makes society.”
