Indian maid charged with theft
SINGAPORE: A maid, who had allegedly staged a
burglary in her former employer's flat, has been charged with
stealing some S$30,000 worth of jewellery.
35-year-old Prema Baskaran, who is an Indian
national, allegedly committed the offence in a unit at Block 32,
Canberra Drive in Yishun at around 8.30am on May 24,
Tuesday.
The police had said Prema had allegedly pretended
that the flat had been broken into. But officers suspected
something was amiss.
They searched the flat and found some jewellery hidden in a water
tank in a bathroom.
Officers confronted her and it is believed she eventually admitted
she had staged the whole scenario.
Police said Prema had allegedly passed more jewellery to three
other Indian nationals.
The trio was arrested later that evening and officers managed to
recover all of the valuables that was allegedly stolen.
Prema was on Thursday offered a bail of S$15,000 and she will be
back in court on June 9.
If convicted of theft, she can be jailed up to seven years and
fined.
