Man gets 7 years' jail & cane for rape
SINGAPORE : A man has been sentenced to seven years'
jail and eight strokes of the cane for raping a 22-year-old woman
he had met at a club.
28-year-old Ong Mingwee, who manages a provision
shop, was arrested on February 12, 2009.
Ong, who met the victim at Zouk, claimed that she
had seduced him when they were dancing and made him feel
embarrassed.
When the club closed at 4am, both left in a taxi for his home at
Block 203 Toa Payoh North.
There, the victim started to cry and said she was scared and wanted
to go home.
Ong maintained that the woman was not drunk when they left the
nightspot together.
However, the prosecution told the court that Ong had lied and the
victim was highly intoxicated at that time.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Leong Wing Tuck said that the distress of
the victim was clearly evident by the calls she had made to her
mother and friend.
He said the victim was crying and shouting over the phone and asked
to be picked up from Ong's place.
She had also informed her mother, over the phone, that Ong would
not let her go unless she had sex with him.
Later, Ong asked the woman if he could have sex with her. He
claimed that she had given her consent by nodding her head.
DPP Leong said that Ong had taken advantage of the victim in her
drunken state.
District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim also said that she had "serious
reservations" about Ong's defence.
She said she found it "very incredible" that the victim gave her
consent in her upset and agitated state.
Ong remained emotionless when his sentence was read out. He is
appealing against his sentence.
