Students in Shanghai outscored their counterparts in more than
60 countries, including Singapore, and attained top marks in an
international education test held recently.
STOMPer Kiasu says the results, which were announced in a
Straits Times report, serves as a warning to Singaporean students
to buck up.
According to the report, the Shanghai students
outperformed Singapore and emerged tops in reading, math and
science.
Singaporean students also scored well in all three categories,
ranking fifth in reading, second in math and fourth in
science.
Both Singapore and Shanghai were first time participants in the
Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) 2009.
STOMPer Kiasu says these results show that very soon we might be
seeing Singaporean mothers accompanying their children to China to
pursue their education there.
The STOMPer says:
"China has consistently proven itself to be a
education powerhouse.
"Now that Shanghai students have topped other
countries' students in reading, math and science, I think it's only
a matter of time before other states in China catch
up.
"Right now, we see Chinese 'pei du ma ma' (Chinese
mums accompanying their children) to pursue their education in
Singapore.
"But in a few years time, I anticipate that there
will be Singaporean 'pei du ma ma' ( Singaporean mums accompanying
their children) in China!
"Singaporeans had better buck up!"
