Winston Churchill ignored pleas for emergency food aid for
millions in Bengal left to starve as their rice paddies were turned
over for sandbag production.
Three million Indians died of hunger in 1943.
Churchill said Britain can't spare ships to transport emergency
supplies as the streets of Calcutta filled with starving villagers
from the surrounding countryside but ministry records and personal
papers reveal ships carrying cereals from Australia bypassed India
on
their way to the Mediterranean where food was already abundant.
United States and Australia offered to send help but couldn't
because Churchill refused to release ships. And when the US offered
to send grain on its own ships, that offer was not followed up by
Churchill.
Churchill's 'racism' was blamed for his refusal to
intervene.
Churchill derided Gandhi as a "half-naked holy man" and once
said: "I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly
religion."
Racism is everywhere. Just like when your parents objected to your
decision to marry an indian girl from Bangalore.
Out of curiousity, what colour is your current or preferred
girlfriend/wife?
Do you know how many indians died of hunger before the
War?
If you had the figures, then maybe you will think thrice about
creating this hoo-hah.
