SINGAPORE: One-cent coins are no longer in
circulation and most goods and services are charged in whole
figures to reduce the hassle of consumers not having enough loose
change for payment.
But that has not been the case when it comes to cab fares and
some passengers are calling for more transparency.
That’s because taxi companies in Singapore differ in their
guidelines on fare calculations.
ComfortDelGro has automatically programmed its cab meters to
round down the fare to the nearest five cents, while SMRT encourages its drivers to collect the full fare by
accepting cashless payments.
Some passengers Channel NewsAsia spoke to said they have
encountered instances when their fare was rounded up to the nearest
ten cents.
But most cab drivers said they charge a few cents lower than the
actual amount to avoid disputes with passengers.
