The green vehicle rebate scheme for new vehicles that run on
compressed natural gas (CNG) will be extended by another year to
Dec 31, 2012.
The scheme, which accords buyers of CNG
cars and commercial vehicles a 40 and 5 per cent rebate
respectively on their additional registration fees, was to end by
Dec 31 this year.
The Ministry of Finance said on Monday that it decided to extend
the scheme by another year after feedback from the public
requesting for it to expire together with a similar scheme for
other green vehicles, namely electric and petrol-electric hybrid
models.
The green vehicle rebate scheme was first introduced in January
2001 for electric and hybrid cars, as such cars were deemed
environmentally friendlier. As such vehicles were substantially
costlier than conventional models, the scheme sought to narrow the
price difference to encourage their usage.
