Drunk man bashes cabby over $20 fare
By Elysa Chen
SWOLLEN and bruised eyes, cuts on the lips, and bruises on his
head and all over his body - a cabby suffered these injuries just
for tapping the shoulder of his passenger and asking him for the
fare.
And not only did the taxi driver fail to get the $20 fare, what
ensued was a 10-minute chase as he desperately tried to flee from
his passenger, who was in a drunken rage.
The cabby, Mr Ong Bon Lai, 63, ended up being brutally punched
and kicked by the passenger, a man half his age.
The assault, which occurred at about 4am on Saturday, stopped
only when two other cabbies who saw the incident rushed to Mr Ong's
rescue.
Mr Ong had earlier picked up two men at the Esplanade and driven
them to Petir Road. One of them, a 29-year-old, was drunk.
When the man and his friend got off the cab near Block 201 at
Petir Road, in the Bukit Panjang area, Mr Ong tried to get them to
pay the fare.
However, the man's friend walked away while the man was throwing
up at the side of the road.
So Mr Ong tapped the man's shoulder and said in Mandarin: "Give
me the taxi fare."
But the drunk man swung around suddenly and hit Mr Ong in the
chest with his left fist.

Said Mr Ong in Mandarin: "It happened so suddenly that I didn't
even have time to avoid the blow.
"The man had seemed gentle and soft-spoken during the ride. I
didn't expect him to react in that way.
"He behaved like a rotten gangster."
Mr Ong took a few steps back and tried to call the police on his
mobile phone.
