The National University of Singapore (NUS) will be
offering three new part-time degree programmes in business
analytics, cyber security and software engineering from
August.
The Bachelor of Technology (BTech) degree programmes
are expected to take in about 160 students — 80 places are
available for business analytics, and 40 each for cyber security
and software engineering.
Offered by the School of Continuing and Lifelong
Education (Scale), in partnership with the School of Computing, the
new programmes aim to meet the demand for professionals in data
analytics, information security and software engineering.
Seven new undergraduate certificate courses in
information and communication technology (ICT) areas, developed in
conjunction with the three new BTech programmes, have also been
introduced. These are eligible for SkillsFuture Credit.
Courses cover foundations in computing, computing
systems and application development, cyber security, software
engineering, business analytics foundations, digital analytics and
institutional analytics.
Students can complete baskets of four to six modules
and obtain certificates in specific sub-areas before obtaining the
degree. Part-time students typically take around four-and-a-half
years to complete a BTech degree programme.
Lessons, taught by NUS academics and industry
professionals, will be delivered through online learning and
face-to-face classes to cater to working adults.
The curriculum caters to students with or without a
computing background or work experience in the IT industry. Those
with relevant experience could graduate faster, whereas those from
non-IT sectors could use it for a career switch.
These new programmes build upon Scale’s existing BTech
offerings in five specialisations — electronics engineering,
mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial and
management engineering, and civil engineering.
NUS set up Scale last year to offer a range of
certificates and programmes to support the lifelong learning needs
of the workforce. About 1,000 adult learners are currently pursuing
the BTech programmes.
With the new courses, the total number of part-time
degree programmes at NUS now number eight.
“The BTech programmes are designed to be highly
relevant to industry, which will prepare students with the
competencies to ride this new ICT wave and take their careers
further,” said Scale’s founding Dean Professor Wei Kwok Kee.
“We are excited to be offering new opportunities for
adult learners to build their expertise and skills,” he added.
Registration for all three new BTech programmes and the
certificate for foundations in computing opened on Tuesday and will
close on June 13.
The remaining six undergraduate certificate courses
will be progressively rolled out from August next year.
Interested applicants can attend a preview session on
June 3 at the NUS University Town or visit scale.nus.edu.sg for
